M and W: A Unique Split-Level Residence

Exploring the Beauty of Nature in a Limited Space

The M and W residence, designed by Shih Chieh Kao, is a stunning example of how modern design can capture the essence of natural scenery. Inspired by the love for mountains, this split-level residence combines functionality with the beauty of nature, creating a unique living experience.

In a mere 43 square meters, the M and W residence showcases the ingenuity of design. By utilizing the elevation characteristics of the split-level space and incorporating flat elevation openings, each area of the residence is carefully crafted to maximize floor utilization and natural lighting. The result is a space that feels expansive and connected to the surrounding environment.

Upon entering the residence, one is immediately struck by the clever use of glass and mirror composite screens. These screens not only separate the entrance and kitchen but also redirect the flow of light, creating a play of virtual and real spaces. The low entrance hallway, reminiscent of a crack in a rock, adds to the open and bright atmosphere of the main living area.

One of the standout features of the M and W residence is the mezzanine level above the study. This addition not only provides a clear distinction between public and private areas but also mimics the different stages of a mountain. The rotating TV wall further blurs the boundaries between the study and living room, creating a seamless and open view throughout the space.

The bedroom on the mezzanine floor is a true highlight of the design. With transparent glass on both sides, it feels as if one is perched on an overhanging rock, with the dressing room representing the opposite mountain. The iron staircase and the study room below are adorned in indigo blue, evoking the tranquility of waterfalls and deep pools. The iron structure details, wrapped in leather, resemble parasitic vines found along mountain trails.

Every aspect of the M and W residence has been carefully considered, down to the smallest details. The specially treated wooden floor will change color over time, reflecting the natural aging process. The TV wall and dining table feature brushed and mottled colors, simulating the erosion of minerals in a stream. These design choices create a sense of organic beauty and a connection to the surrounding natural environment.

In this multi-layered space, the M and W residence invites its occupants to become explorers, discovering new scenery and moods with every turn. Whether working in the multifunctional study room, enjoying a book in the reading area, or simply gazing out at the outdoor scenery from the stairs, the homeowner is immersed in the beauty of the mountains and forests.

The M and W residence was completed in August 2020 in Taiwan. It is a testament to the designer's meticulous research and creative problem-solving. Despite the limited space, the residence offers a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Shih Chieh Kao's design for the M and W residence has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award in 2022. This award celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The M and W residence stands as a testament to the power of design to create a better world.
